Welcome to Maple City Grand Prix

What a great way to start.

After introducing tunnel boat racing to LaPorte County last year to rave reviews, US F1 Powerboat Tour and Visit Michigan City are excited to build on last year’s amazing inaugural event.

More than 20,000 spectators watched some of the fastest tunnel hull boats in the world battle for the inaugural Maple City Grand Prix crown in May, 2013, which went to eventual F1 World Champion Terry Rinker.

Mark Schmerebauch took away the inaugural Maple City Grand Prix F Lights championship the same weekend from a field of 13 “45s.”

Rinker led a field of 15 F1 boats in three days of racing that pumped more than $1 million into the local, LaPorte economy. It was one of the largest, most important, event-based financial boosts the city has ever seen.

Racers and fans alike enjoyed three days of racing and testing at Stone Lake, as well as VIP and racer parties and a race boat parade and block party on Saturday night in downtown LaPorte.

The site, and hospitality of the people of LaPorte, made an immediate impression on the racers and teams and left them with an impressive need to make it back for the second annual race, to be held this May 30 – June 1.

“LaPorte was great last year and it will only get better,” said US F1 President, and last year’s fifth-place finisher in F1, Jose Mendana, jr. “Everybody loved it here. It’s one of the best first-year races I’ve ever seen.
